Other major publishers have made similar moves. Facebook and Instagram have suspended Mr Trump at least until Inauguration Day, while Twitch and Snapchat also have disabled Mr Trump’s accounts.

Shopify took down online stores affiliated with the president, while Amazon removed Trump’s channel. On Wednesday, YouTube announced that it was also temporarily banning the US President.

In response President Trump has said he may launch his own platform.

Here’s all you need to know about the social media sites that have banned the US President:

Twitter has permanently banned Mr Trump from its site following the riots at the US Capitol. 

The platform initially suspended Mr Trump’s account for 12 hours after he posted a video that repeated false claims about election fraud and praised the rioters who stormed the Capitol.

But they issued the permanent ban over two specific tweets that Mr Trump shared on the @POTUS account following his return to the site.  

The tweets were “The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!” and “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th”.

Twitter also suspended the @TeamTrump account after it spread a statement from the president.

Twitter has long been accused of giving Mr Trump and other world leaders broad exemptions from its rules on issues such as personal attacks and suspected hate speech.

The company announced the news in early on Wednesday.

“After review, and in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to Donald J Trump’s channel for violating our policies,” YouTube said in a statement on Twitter.

“It now has its 1st strike & is temporarily prevented from uploading new content for a *minimum* of 7 days.

“Given the ongoing concerns about violence, we will also be indefinitely disabling comments on President Trump’s channel, as we’ve done to other channels where there are safety concerns found in the comments section.”

Facebook’s move marked the most significant sanction of the president by a major social media company.

“The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,” the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.

Multi-media messaging app Snapchat has locked the US President’s account indefinitely. It has also ceased to promote his content.

Snapchat spokeswoman Rachel Racusen said: “We can confirm that earlier today we locked President Trump’s Snapchat account.”

Live streaming website Twitch has also disabled Mr Trump’s account.

In a statement a Twitch spokesperson said. “In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel.

“Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the President’s incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence.”

E-commerce platform Shopify shut service for stores affiliated with Mr Trump for violations of its “acceptable use” policy, prompting e-commerce sites for both the campaign and the Trump Organization to go offline.
