Basketball, peanut butter, road lines. Wonderbra, IMAX, pacemakers, Shopify — what do all these things have in common? They’re all products of Canadian ingenuity. Yes, from sports inventors to e-commerce giants, Canucks have left their mark on their world.
Each of these brainchildren has its backstory and Shopify is no different. Back in 2004, three Canadians were inspired by a poor online shopping experience with snowboarding equipment and felt the need to make the process better. Shopify has now grown to be one of the most popular e-commerce platforms on the planet, with almost 20 per cent market share.
The future of e-commerce
Online shopping, in general, has soared, largely due to the pandemic, but also thanks to the modern convenience of technology and the ease of it all. With a mere push of the button, you can have almost everything and anything delivered to your doorstep. Global e-commerce sales are expected to increase by around 14 per cent in 2021, and worldwide sales aren’t too far away from $5 trillion.
Shopify – a true success story
Shopify, in particular, has experienced exponential growth. Total platform sales from around the world are estimated at $100 billion to date. There were 218 million buyers on the platform in the last year. In May and June of 2020, the site reached 66.6 million and 63.3 million visits respectively. All this to say that if you’re looking to start your own e-commerce store, Shopify should be a serious consideration.
